Understanding PSLE Cut-Off Points (COP)

Understanding PSLE Cut-Off Points (COP)
Understanding PSLE Cut-Off Points (COP)

The cut-off point (COP) for each school refers to the AL score of the last student admitted into that school in the previous year.

Key things to note:

  • COPs change yearly based on demand and cohort performance.

  • Schools are grouped into Posting Groups (PG1, PG2, PG3) under the new Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) system.

  • Higher Chinese Language (HCL) results can be used as a tie-breaker for SAP (Special Assistance Programme) schools.

This means a school that had a COP of AL 8 last year might see a shift to AL 7 or AL 9 this year depending on the overall application trends. Hence, COPs are a useful guide, but not a guarantee.

Examples of Secondary School Cut-Off Points

Here’s an overview of some indicative cut-off points (based on 2024 data for 2025 admission):

School Type

School Name

Indicative AL Range / COP

Notes

Top / IP Schools

Raffles Girls’ School

AL 4- 5

Among the most competitive in Singapore.

Hwa Chong Institution

AL 4- 6 (with HCL)

Requires strong HCL results for SAP admission.

Dunman High School

AL 4-7 (IP Track)

Competitive yet holistic IP programme.

Autonomous Schools

River Valley High School

AL 4-8

Strong academic reputation, IP route available.

Anglican High School

AL 5-11

Known for balanced academics and CCAs.

Government / Neighbourhood Schools

St. Hilda’s Secondary

AL 10–27
(Depending on posting group)

Popular East-side school with good CCA diversity.

North Vista Secondary

AL 10-27
(Depending on posting group)

Supportive environment, ideal for FSBB flexibility.

(Note: These are indicative figures based on publicly available information and may vary slightly each year.)

  • To enter top IP schools, students usually need single-digit AL scores.

  • However! Many strong government and autonomous schools remain open to students with moderate AL scores.

  • School selection should include a mix of “dream,” “target,” and “safe” choices to improve placement chances.

While your child’s PSLE score determines eligibility, it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor. Here’s what else to consider:

1. School Environment & Culture

Every school has a unique ethos. Some emphasise discipline and academic rigour, while others focus on creativity, sports, or holistic development. Visit open houses or check each school’s website to get a feel of the culture.

2. CCA Opportunities

A strong Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) programme helps your child discover passions outside the classroom — whether in music, robotics, or sports.

3. Location & Commute

A shorter commute can mean more time for rest and study. Consider nearby schools first, especially if your child values convenience.

*Do note that unlike Primary school balloting this is not one of the key criteria for entry.

4. Affiliations & Subject Flexibility

  • Certain primary schools offer affiliation advantages for secondary entry.

Under Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB), students can take subjects at different levels based on their strengths — so school flexibility matters.

Setting Realistic Targets: How to Plan Your School Choices

  • Here’s how parents and students can strategise effectively:

    • Study recent COP trends – Look at the past 2–3 years for patterns rather than one-off results.

    • Include a variety of schools – List one aspirational school, two target schools, and two safe options.

    • Factor in tie-breakers – net score, citizenship, and raw scores play a vital role.

    • Understand posting groups – Each posting group (PG1–PG3) determines which subject combinations are offered.

    • Visit open houses – Meet teachers and students to gauge whether your child will thrive in that environment.
  •

Conclusion: A Balanced View of PSLE Success

A “good” PSLE score isn’t just one that secures entry into an elite school — it’s a score that opens doors to a secondary environment where your child can learn, grow, and be happy.

By understanding how AL scores, cut-off points, and school choices work together, parents can guide their children toward schools that best fit their aspirations and strengths. Remember: the goal isn’t just to get into a good school — it’s to make the most of it once you’re there.
