Starting H2 Math in 2025? Here’s What You Need to Know About the New H2 Math Syllabus

If you’re taking H2 Mathematics from 2025 onward, you’re starting on a fresh syllabus (with changes implemented 2024) that reflects the latest updates by SEAB.

While many of the core topics like calculus, vectors, and statistics remain, the new syllabus places stronger emphasis on real-world application, mathematical modelling, and structured problem solving—all while streamlining content for clarity and deeper understanding.

Whether you’re coming from O-Level A-Math or bridging the gap from Sec 4, it’s important to understand what’s changed, what’s been retained, and what new skills will be tested. This guide will walk you through the key topics covered and the most important syllabus changes—so you can stay ahead and study smarter from Day 1.

Changes in the H2 Math Syllabus

1. Greater Emphasis on Real-World Applications

– New problems and examples focus more on modelling real-life scenarios, especially in statistics and differentiation/integration.

– Encourages students to interpret data and apply math concepts meaningfully.

2. Shift in Exam Format

  • Two 3-hour papers remain, but there’s:

    – More integration of topics across questions.

    – Fewer procedural questions; students must synthesise concepts and apply problem-solving skills.

3. Topics Adjusted or Reorganised (H2 Math Syllabus 9758)

– Complex Numbers: Removal of loci in the complex plane

– Sequences and Series: Clearer definitions between arithmetic, geometric, and recurrence relations.

– Vectors: Similar topics (No changes)

– Differentiation and Integration: Stronger emphasis on applications,

– Added differential equations,
– Added Integration of dy/dx = f(x)g(y)
– Removed area under the curve for Parametric equations.

– Probability & Statistics: Updated to reflect data literacy, hypothesis testing, and real-world distributions (like normal, binomial,).

– Poisson distribution is removed from the recent syllabus.

4. Removal/Reduction of Some Content

Some earlier topics like Maclaurin series and proofs of standard identities have been deemphasised or restructured to streamline learning.

5. Stronger Conceptual Focus

– The curriculum encourages students to understand “why”, not just “how”.

– Encourages graphing technology and visualisation tools in class (though exams are still non-calculator).

Summary of What's Tested:

All listed topics are relevant and examinable in the 2025 H2 Mathematics syllabus.

Major Topic Area

Examples Included

Functions & Graphs

Modulus, composite/inverse functions

Calculus

Chain rule, integration techniques

Sequences & Series

Summations, AP/GP, recurrence

Vectors (3D)

Scalar and vector products

Complex Numbers

Loci, modulus-argument form

Probability & Statistics

Binomial, Normal, Hypothesis testing

Tip for Students:

Understanding the why behind each method, and being able to relate concepts across topics (e.g., vectors + geometry + calculus) is crucial. Exams now reward application, synthesis, and reasoning far more than memorisation.

Practice Regularly

Regular practice is essential for mastering the key concepts and techniques covered in the A Level Mathematics syllabus. Practicing regularly helps students develop problem-solving skills and improve ability to apply mathematical knowledge in different contexts.

Seek Help When Needed (A Level Math Tuition)

It is important for students to seek help when they encounter difficulties or have questions about the material.

This can involve asking teachers, classmates, or tutors for assistance, or making use of online resources and forums.
