PSLE Math Syllabus 2024

How is the PSLE Score Calculated

In Singapore, the PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination) score is calculated using the Achievement Level (AL) system, which was introduced in 2021 to replace the old T-score system.

*Contrary to the old system, for the AL points,  a lower number is a better result!

How the PSLE Score is Calculated

Each subject—English, Mathematics, Science, and Mother Tongue (e.g., Chinese, Malay, Tamil)—is graded using Achievement Levels (ALs) on a scale of AL1 to AL8 based on the student’s raw marks.

Achievement Levels (AL) and Their Score Range:

  • AL1: 90 – 100
  • AL2: 85 – 89
  • AL3: 80 – 84
  • AL4: 75 – 79
  • AL5: 65 – 74
  • AL6: 45 – 64
  • AL7: 20 – 44
  • AL8: 0 – 19

Total PSLE Score Calculation

The PSLE Score is the sum of the AL scores from the four subjects:

PSLE Score = AL (English) + AL (Math) + AL (Science) + AL (Mother Tongue)

The lowest (best) possible PSLE score is 4 (AL1 in all subjects), while the highest (worst) possible score is 32 (AL8 in all subjects).

Secondary School Posting & Express/NA/NT Streams

  • Express Stream: Usually requires a PSLE Score of 4 – 20
  • Normal (Academic) Stream: PSLE Score of 21 – 25
  • Normal (Technical) Stream: PSLE Score of 26 – 30 (with AL7/AL8 in subjects)

Students are allocated to secondary schools based on their PSLE score and school choices. If multiple students have the same score, tie-breakers include citizenship and computerized balloting if necessary.

How PSLE Scores Affect Secondary School Choices & Subject-Based Banding

Once a student receives their PSLE Score, their secondary school options are determined by:

  1. The secondary school cut-off points (based on previous years’ admission scores).
  2. The three academic streams: Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical). Do note that under the new system from 2024, students are posted to secondary schools through Posting Groups 1, 2, and 3.
  3. Subject-Based Banding (SBB) for Normal stream students.
