G1 G2 and G3 Mathematics Syllabus
G1 G2 and G3 Mathematics Syllabus

Starting from 2027, Secondary 4 students in Singapore will sit for the new Singapore Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) Examination. This change aligns with the Subject-Based Banding (SBB) system that was introduced in schools last year.

Under Subject-Based Banding, students take subjects at different levels—G1, G2, or G3—which correspond roughly to the former Normal (Technical), Normal (Academic), and Express streams, respectively.

This flexible system allows students to progress according to their strengths and interests. For example, a Secondary 1 student initially taking G1 Mathematics who demonstrates aptitude and interest in the subject may request to be assessed for a possible move to G2 or even G3 Mathematics in the following year.

The aim is to empower students to thrive in areas they are passionate about, rather than being restricted by fixed academic tracks.

However, with this new structure, there may be some uncertainty about what a G3 Mathematics curriculum actually entails. Read on for a breakdown of the topics typically covered at each level.

G1 (General 1)

Foundation:

This level focuses on building a strong foundation in basic mathematical concepts and skills. The content falls under the three main strands of algebra, geometry/measurement and stats/probability.

Content:

G1 math typically covers topics like:

Number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

Basic algebra (solving linear equations, simplifying expressions)

Geometry (basic shapes, area, perimeter, congruence, pythagoras)

Data handling (representing, interpreting data, table, bar graph, line graph, pie charts)

G2 (General 2):

Intermediate:

This level builds upon the foundation of G1, introducing more complex concepts and problem-solving techniques.

Content:

G2 math expands on G1 topics and includes:

More advanced algebra and number operations (algebraic expressions and formula, solving quadratic equations, factoring, equations and inequalities)

Geometry (coordinate geometry, pythagoras, trigonometry, volume)

Probability and statistics (basic probability, data analysis)

G2 (General 2) Additional Math:

More advanced algebra (surds, polynomial and partial fractions, differentiation and integration.)

Geometry (trigonometric functions, coordinate geometry, constructions)

Probability and statistics (basic probability, data analysis)

G3 (General 3):

Advanced:

This level is the most demanding and prepares students for higher education pathways.

Content:

G3 math covers more advanced and challenging topics, including all above content and:

More advanced algebra (differentiation and integration, surds, polynomial and partial fractions, binomial expansion)

Geometry (trigonometric functions, coordinate geometry, constructions)

Probability and statistics (basic probability, data analysis)

G3 (General 3) Additional Math:

More advanced algebra (differentiation and integration, surds, polynomial and partial fractions, binomial expansion, calculus, differentiation and integration)

Geometry (trigonometric functions, coordinate geometry, constructions)

Probability and statistics (basic probability, data analysis)
