2… and a half Types of Math Learners

TSV Math Tuition Centre prides itself on not following a one-size-fits-all approach to learning. Here’s what that means.

In 2011, then Education Minister Heng Swee Keat coined a slogan that would go viral – “Every school, a good school.” Despite good intentions, perhaps it lacked the nuance that surrounded public perception of elite schools, especially in that day and age.

Today, you can find a variation of this phrase on MOE’s Forward SG webpage – “There is a good school for every child”. Without the more idealistic tone of the original message, it’s easier to see the vision – that in Singapore, no child should be left behind.

At TSV math tuition centre, this is a sentiment echoed by none other than our Founder herself, Ms Sonia Tan – in TSV’s Founder’s Interview. To achieve this vision, TSV has paid special care to craft a customised learning environment conducive for each unique student that attends any of our math classes – be it Upper Primary, Secondary, JC or IB maths.

Which Math Tuition is best?

When it comes to learning, there is no perfect class that will “copy-paste” knowledge from a teacher to a student. However, a passionate teacher will customise their lesson to better fit their students, to continuously engage them in learning and make the class enjoyable for them.

After all, learning does not end once the class ends. Crafting this positive experience within the classroom allows students to make positive associations with the very notion of learning, and slowly turn the subject of math into one that they’ll enjoy more – whether it be in tuition class, or when revising their syllabus in their own time.

Which Math Tuition is good?

To find a math tuition that is good for a specific student, we need to look at the needs of the student themselves – and customise a learning experience for them, specific to their strengths and weaknesses.

For social math learners

Some students focus well in class – and struggle to get an ounce of work done outside the classroom. While this can be attributed to various factors, some of us function better when we’re in a social environment – be it lecture-style classes, or group-based learning.

A common rebuttal to this is the dismissive – “Who’s taking your exam? Your friend?”

While having a social environment certainly will lead to discussion, such conversations can be a way for students to both reinforce what they have just learnt – particularly effective for auditory learners – and to ensure misconceptions are nipped in the bud before they become a hassle to unlearn.

As a group, students may find further motivation to study, even without much conversation at all – to witness other people’s efforts first-hand can often be all it takes to be inspired to take your first step forward too.

Certainly, independence, discipline and resilience are important qualities to instill in our students, but it is equally important to balance that with the net positives that can arise from a dedicated social learning environment – building confidence, inspiring curiosity, exercising social skills, and creating a support network.

Not only for more independent math learners

At the same time, there are some times where we may benefit from a smaller learning environment.

The school curriculum – be it Primary Math, Secondary Math, JC Math or IB Math – is both vast and deep. In a smaller learning environment, covering the extensive syllabus can be customised even further – to be more easily and efficiently digested by a specific individual. This allows the student to spend more time on honing their craft, and aiming for that highest band – be it an AL 1 for PSLE, or an A1 for H2 Maths.

When students struggle more with certain topics, or perhaps are more interested in certain topics, this may lead to more niche questions that may be uncomfortable to raise in a large class setting.

For these students, smaller 1-to-1 class settings can more effectively address students’ weaknesses, or alternatively, encourage students to ask more questions and incentivise their curiosity about the subject – both positive outcomes of a smaller learning environment.

For more independent math learners

Some of us are more independent learners – we don’t necessarily require more motivation or help to study.

For some independent learners, your appetite for knowledge may be more than what a school curriculum is meant to keep up with – in which case, a head start tuition programme may better suit your needs, so that you can later continue to spend your time revising topics with greater efficiency.

Additionally, time-management is often a crucial factor when considering the needs of more independent learners. With an independent learner, the various other classes and projects one might have can quickly add up, overtaking most of your free time and schedule. In such situations, the accessibility that a tuition centre offers can be a crucial factor to consider – tuition centres with public transport connectivity, or online classes, may be more appealing.

What makes a Good Tuition centre?

At the end of the day, there are far more than the two and a half types of learners that we’ve just covered. Often, students may find themselves having different needs depending on factors such as school activities, topics being covered, or even their maturity and the stage of life they’re at. A good tuition centre should understand this – and cater to it as best they can.

At TSV Math Tuition Centre, we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to learning. More independent learners would prefer online lessons that they can revisit in their free time – whereas others may find it ineffective and distracting, perhaps only worsening the same problem of excessive screen time that Grow Well SG is meant to counter.

To target this, both onsite and online lessons are made available to all our students. Also based right next to Beauty World MRT (DT5), TSV is certainly one of the most accessible tuition centres in Bukit Timah.

Additionally, we offer a wide variety of lesson types – lecture style, small-group based, one-to-one, and even holiday headstart and fast-track programmes – to cater to the various needs that each of our students may require. Each lesson type comes with its own different, specially-curated worksheets that are revised yearly, with the latest exam questions. Our passionate teachers go above and beyond – with unlimited consultations available with them for students to book, to clear any doubts they may have.

But at TSV, we still felt that this wasn’t enough. That’s why, before students even attend any classes, they go through a special diagnostic class first, to pinpoint weaker topics and draft out a proper study plan tailored for them. After all, only after we build up our students’ foundation, can we then go on to guide them to mastery with a wider variety of question types.

In this way, TSV seeks to do our part, to achieve the vision we shared earlier – a Singapore in which no child is left behind.
